Planning connectivity for
a mobile site office.

A desk and a power point are only part of a working site office. Before choosing a communications fit-out, describe what your team needs to do online, who supplies the connection and how the equipment will move with the unit.

01 — Working requirements

Start with the tasks, not the equipment list.

Write down how the office will be used during a normal shift. Site paperwork, drawing downloads, video meetings and shared documents create different needs from occasional email. Note how many people will connect at the same time, which devices they use and whether other crew members need access during breaks. Include any proposed screens or cameras in the discussion.

The Series 7 combines a crew facility with an office area containing two workstations. That layout does not define the number of connected devices or the internet service required. Review the floor plans alongside a task list so that desk use, meetings and equipment storage are considered together.

02 — Connection at the site

Check the intended location before selecting a service.

Ask the project team which connection options can be assessed at the actual position of the unit. Depending on the site, that discussion might involve an existing site network, mobile broadband or a satellite service. Availability and suitability need checking with the relevant provider or installer; a suburb name alone is not a connection plan.

Record who will arrange the service and how it will be tested. If reliable access is essential to daily work, ask the provider about appropriate contingency arrangements rather than assuming another connection will be available. Revisit the assessment when the office moves to a new work front or project, even if the same equipment is being retained.

03 — Included scope

Separate readiness from a supplied internet service.

The current Series 7 specifications list a data rack, Ethernet points, TV, satellite-internet-ready connectivity and CCTV as options, depending on the final design and quotation. Treat these as items to define in the brief. A provision for equipment is different from supplying that equipment, configuring it or arranging an ongoing service.

For each proposed item, record whether it is supplied with the unit, supplied by your business or arranged through a separate provider. Confirm responsibility for installation, configuration and support. Ask what “ready” means for the selected build, including any agreed cabling, mounting provisions and connection points. Keep those details in the quotation rather than relying on a general label.

04 — Layout and installation

Decide where the equipment belongs.

Mark intended desk equipment, network equipment and connection points on the proposed layout. Consider how users will plug in without leaving cables across access routes, where equipment will be stored and how authorised people can reach it for support. Share any equipment-specific mounting, ventilation or clearance requirements with Site Mate and the installer.

Discuss external equipment and cable entry requirements before the build is confirmed. Do not assume that later mounting or alterations will suit the selected unit. The custom layout guide explains how to brief changes early, when power, storage, cabling and mounting locations can be considered together. Custom arrangements remain subject to design review and quote.

05 — Power and daily use

Put communications equipment in the load brief.

List routers, terminals, screens and other proposed equipment with their stated power requirements and expected operating hours. Identify anything that needs to remain powered outside normal office hours, such as a proposed monitoring connection. Supply those details with the broader appliance list so the communications plan and power plan describe the same working day.

The Series 7 Off-Grid uses an 8 kW off-grid power system. That description is not an internet performance or uptime promise. Off-grid operating time depends on loads and weather. Use the off-grid power planning guide to organise the equipment information and discuss the selected configuration before confirming the order.

06 — Handover and relocation

Agree what a working handover includes.

Before delivery, agree who will check the installed connection points, supplied equipment and service activation. Test the tasks that matter to the crew with the people responsible for the service. Record unresolved items and support contacts, and keep operating information with the unit. Arrange secure access to account details through your business's normal process rather than leaving credentials displayed in the office.

After relocation, recheck the connection, equipment position and the receiving site's arrangements. Include communications in the site-readiness checklist and, for multiple units, the fleet handover record. A useful enquiry includes the site location, users, tasks, proposed service, equipment ownership, power needs and preferred layout. Discuss purchase or long-term project hire with that brief in hand.

Common questions

Site office connectivity FAQ.

Does satellite-internet-ready mean internet service is included?

No. Readiness does not confirm that a terminal, router, service plan or working connection is included. Confirm the equipment supplied, installation scope and service arrangements in the quotation.

Can communications options be discussed for the Series 7?

Yes. Site Mate lists options including a data rack, Ethernet points, TV, satellite-internet-ready connectivity and CCTV, depending on the final design and quotation. Discuss equipment locations, power and cabling before confirming the fit-out.

Will an off-grid power system guarantee internet access?

No. Power and connectivity need separate checks. The equipment needs a suitable power supply, while the connection depends on the selected service, site conditions and installation. Off-grid operating time depends on loads and weather.
